Recording

Using the latest digital technology operating at up to 24 bit 96kHz supported by a range of outboard equipment our aim is to record you sounding as good as possible. The main recorder uses a 24 track system but has a total of 384 tracks available and almost no limit to the number of takes that can be recorded and kept for review.  Once recorded we can apply a range of effects as needed, compression, reverbs, delays, modulation, chorus, mic and amp simulators and even if needed pitch correction to bring back into pitch that flat note on what otherwise would be a perfect performance.  Editing down to the actual waveform is possible to remove any unwanted noise, pops, clicks, or the odd sniffle and cough.  We also have a range of instruments and amplifiers for use

Mastering

We offer a top class mastering service to produce a finished CD with all the tracks balanced in terms of volume, overall sound and song sequence in order to produce a professional sounding CD.

We can also master songs recorded in other studios or on other equipment and most of the time produce noticeable improvements to the original material. This is achieved using a digital mastering suite consisting of multi-band compression, enhancers, equalisation and limiters.

Session Musicians

We can supply a range of session musicians, guitar, drums, piano, keyboard, and vocalists etc to make sure that you have the product you want.

Composing, Arranging and Producing

Many people find they can write the words and have an idea of the tune they want but are unable to put everything together.  Given the words, a rough idea of the tune and the style you want for your finished song we can compose, arrange and turn your scribbled down notes into a finished song.

Midi

The system is fully midi synchronised so that the sound from midi sequencers can be recorded on a track by track basis to provide the maximum flexibility for mixing.  A number of sequencers and sound modules are available for your use.

Backing Tracks

Thousands of professionally produced backing tracks are readily available. Wrong key, no problem, the key can be changed instantly to suite your vocal range.

Short Run CD Production

We can produce short runs of up to 20 CDs for you to take away and then advise you in terms of mass reproduction to ensure that there is no compromise on quality.

The Costs.

At Dormdust Productions we aim to provide a top quality professional service at competitive rates.  Every project is different and therefore it is not possible to accurately predict how much it will cost for the services you need.  Our rates are £25.00 per hour but discount rates are available for block bookings.

"In terms of how much it costs and how much is achieved is down to you, how prepared you are and how many re takes are needed.  Contact us to discuss your exact requirements.  Typically, for a four piece band with the instruments recorded together and then overdubbing for solos and vocals it is possible to record, mix and master three to fours songs in a day.  There is obviously a balance between this approach and the approach where it takes a week (or more!) to produce one song, but these are things to be discussed.

The Studio

The studio is a purpose designed and built facility offering an isolated soundproofed live room and separate control room.  Both rooms are acoustically treated to provide the ideal environment for recording and producing high quality compositions.

The live room will easily accommodate a five piece rock band with all the associated equipment or a small ensemble of up to 15 people.  The live room also provides a very useful practice/rehearsal space.  Sound isolations is important for recoding , it’s main reason being to keep sounds from out of the recording space, not just to keep the neighbours happy.

The studio is set in private grounds which provide ideal areas for relaxing when not recoding.

A large range of equipment is used at Dormdust Productions, some of which is listed below.

The Studio Session

For a band with drums the first couple of hours will be setting up and getting things to sound right at source.  We wouldn’t be attempting to record anything until the drums, guitars, amps were all in tune and sounding great.  The biggest challenge is always the drums.  In a live situation you never notice the odd rattle and the fact that when you hit one of the toms the snare rattles like a can of marbles.  As soon as you put mics on a drum kit they will pick up things that you didn’t even know existed.  Now we can to some extent sort this out in the mixing by using things called “gates”, but the best option is always to fix the problem at source.  So, and this goes to all of you not just the drummer, the day before your studio sessions check all your gear out.  New strings on guitars (which might be better fitted a few days before the session) drums tuned and checked for rattles, leads and straps in good order (we do have a few spares) and most of all, make sure you know your parts.  I don’t mind you paying me to hang around drinking tea whilst you learn your parts, but it’s an expensive way to do things.  There will be some things that you want to try out that are different but come well prepared knowing all the basics.

As for the vocalists, don’t give in to the urge to eat a dozen packets of throat lozenges the day before thinking it will do you good.  If it isn’t broke don’t try and fix it.  Just don’t have a red hot curry the night before, and if you have a favourite type of bottled water bring some with you.  Not that our tap water is bad or anything but I know how temperamental you wanna be pop stars can be!!

If you are just a vocalist wanting to lay some tacks down to some pre-recorded backing tracks then we are normally up and running within a few minutes of you walking through the door.  Let us know a couple of days before what backing tracks you need so we can get them ready, all we do then is a few quick checks on different mics, pre amps and compressors to see which is best for your voice and away we go.

Having said all the above, relax and enjoy it.  Let us have all the worries and pressures.   A studio is a place where you can play your music, be artistic, and take as long as is needed.
